A Legacy of Compassion and Healing
The journey began in 1993 when Dr. Betty and Dr. Dan Gikonyo witnessed the devastating reality of children losing their lives to preventable heart diseases. Driven by a passion for change, they founded Heart to Heart Foundation Kenya with a mission to provide hope and healing.
Since then, we have worked tirelessly to ensure that children with heart ailments receive the care they deserve. Our success would not be possible without the dedication of medical professionals, the commitment of volunteers, and the generosity of donors. Together, we have transformed the lives of countless children and given their families renewed hope.

Impact Over the Years
In 30 years, Heart to Heart Foundation Kenya has facilitated over 600 successful heart surgeries. Despite challenges, we have remained committed to expanding medical innovation, ensuring accessible healthcare for underprivileged children, and supporting families through their child’s medical journey.
Fortunately, the NHIF scheme now covers half of the medical costs for these procedures. However, many families still struggle to raise the remaining Ksh 500,000, as they are often focused on meeting basic survival needs. While we encourage cost-sharing efforts within families and communities, the Foundation continues to bear the bulk of the financial burden.
Fundraising Initiatives at Heart to Heart Foundation Kenya
To bridge the funding gap, the Foundation has developed various successful fundraising initiatives, including:
✅ The Annual Heart Run/Walk This flagship event brings together schoolchildren, families, corporates, and private sector players for a fun, impactful cause. Over the years, participation from schools has steadily increased, making it a highly anticipated event.
One of the most memorable runs was held on June 17, 2023, at Carnivore Grounds, where thousands gathered with compassion and determination. The energy was electric as participants ran to raise funds and awareness for pediatric cardiac care in Kenya.
